Antique Victorian / Belle Epoque ring. Diamond in 9ct gold and silver mount. Made in United Kingdom late 19th to early 20th century.
Maker possibly Henry Griffith & Sons. Measurements: Weight is 2.2 grams. Diamond professionally appraised as being 0.84ct (looks bigger), D-E color. Description : A stunning ring from the Belle Epoque period that typified the most graceful and beautifully made jewellery. It is set with a fabulous diamond, quite transparent in color and professionally appraised as D-E. It is very likely that this is an original Golconda diamond from the defunct mines of India, possibly recut at a later date to fit this setting. The mount is 9ct gold and silver. Silver was typically used for setting diamonds in bygone eras as they were seen more favorably in gas lighting. The shoulders of the mount divide into 3 cobra - like heads or long, undulating leaves, with beaded borders and set with tiny rose-cut diamonds. The rest of the shank is a simple 9ct gold band. The ring is very beautiful and while it can be worn with absolutely any outfit, it would make a perfect engagement or wedding ring. This is a ring to give pleasure for a life-time and then to pass on to one's children.
Jewellery that was part English or European and part Indian (the gems) was common during the early 20th century and typified by Cartier, who re-set many of the world's most famous gemstones. Marks and Metal: Inside shank are a number of marks: HG&S, believed to be for Henry Griffith & Sons.
